Extraordinary Places. Extraordinary Representations
As an avid outdoorsman I’ve long nurtured a deep appreciation for maps of all kinds. Transcending its simple utility, a well crafted map is a remarkable blend of form and function.
Topographical maps in particular, by systematically processing the chaos of Creation, are filled with unique patterns. I find that laser engraving is an unparalleled method of highlighting the exquisite detail and artistry of the Earth’s surface.
Materials
Map Panel: 24ga exterior galvanized steel with premium matte finish.
Accents: Adhered hardwood veneer.
Frame/backer: Cabinet-grade plywood with lacquer finish.
Process
I start by finding high-quality digital maps of the desired area and importing them into my design program for editing. Editing involves splitting the original map into its component parts (roads, streams, etc), trimming overlapping information, stitching sections together, adding additional information, and finally, formatting the output for the laser.
The next step is to engrave the metal panel. I use 2 different engraving techniques with each map. The first part engraves all the text and features using a standard “scan” process similar to regular printing. The second traces each topographical line individually for stunning results.
The frame panel is sanded, edge banded, lacquered, and hanger installed. The map panel and standoffs are then pre-drilled and mounted to the frame with both screws and adhesive.

Finally, the hardwood veneer accents are laser cut and carefully positioned for the final artistic touch.
